What's it like to be a Process Engineer?
Process Engineers check on equipment, analyse data, update systems, and conduct risk assessments to ensure products are produced in an efficient way, in compliance with health and safety regulations and standards. They typically operate in the biotechnology, chemical, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries, but they may also work for agriculture, automotive, as well as mining companies.
Tasks and duties
- Producing and optimising industrial processes and getting them certified.
- Researching and working with data to analyse effectivity and cost-efficiency of processes.
- Designing layout of machinery and equipment.
- Laying safety guidelines and procedures in place for the handling of hazardous materials or chemicals.
- Testing and modifying processes as needed.
- Solving any issues that stem from the processes.
Process Engineers commonly work in a laboratory or office setting, and frequently visit factories, plants, and other sites to supervise operations.
How to become a Process Engineer
Aspiring Process Engineers must have attained a bachelor degree in chemistry, industrial and manufacturing engineering, or environmental engineering. Graduate degrees may be advantageous for those seeking jobs in the research and development space.
- Attain at least a college degree in chemistry, industrial and manufacturing engineering, environmental engineering, or any similar course.
- Seek training and experience. Some companies offer coaching and development programmes for fresh graduates.
- Consider completing a Six Sigma programme to enhance your business process management skills.
- Apply for a process engineering job in a biotechnology, chemical, manufacturing, or pharmaceutical company.
