What's it like to be a Retail Pharmacist?
A Retail Pharmacist works at drugstores, pharmacies, and other retail establishments for medicines. They are in charge of collecting pharmaceuticals from pharmacy stores in accordance with a customer’s prescription. Attention to detail, organisation, and customer service are key skills for the job. Retail Pharmacists may also dispense non-prescription goods and advise customers on the use of medicines.
Tasks and duties
- Evaluating customer prescriptions for validity and accuracy.
- Dispensing prescribed medications to customers.
- Informing customers about pharmaceutical use and possible side effects.
- Recording transactions and inventory.
- Assisting customers with inquiries and purchases.
- Replenishing and organising pharmaceutical stores.
- Labelling medications and other products.
How to become a Retail Pharmacist
To work as a Retail Pharmacist a bachelor degree and a licence to practise pharmacy are required. Prior to university, aspiring Pharmacists should take mathematics and science subjects such as chemistry, biology, or additional mathematics for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.
Consider taking a pre-university programme such as A Levels, STPM, or Foundation in Science.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in pharmacy from a recognised university.
Complete an internship at a recognised pharmacy.
Take and pass the Qualifying Examination to Practice Pharmacy.
Register to become a Provisionally Registered Pharmacist (PRP).
Undergo the PRP training for one year.
Apply to become a Fully Registered Pharmacist (FRP).
